Happy`Women in Small Business’ Month Everyone

Entrepreneurs, Inspiration & Motivation | October 16th, 2009 | No Comments

Female entrepreneurs are taking the economy by storm and that’s why October is Women in Small Business Month.

Celebrate

Celebrate

Women In Small Business Month “unites the tens of thousands of women entrepreneurs around the globe,” according to Erin Hurry, president and founder of Girls With Goals.

“It is a special and important occasion for powerful and visionary women to gain strength and inspiration from each other.”

In the US, women-owned businesses have grown steadily in each of the last ten years. Women in Small Business Month calls attention to the success-minded individuals who are dedicated to igniting their business.

I’d say more like starting a fantastic bonfire if the stats below are anything to go by.

Did you know?

  • Women are starting businesses at twice the rate of men
  • Currently there are over 10.6 million women-owned businesses in the US employing 19.1 million people and generating $2.5 trillion in sales
  • Women make or influence over 80% of all purchasing decisions
  • Business growth is the #1 concern of business owners
  • Women now make up 41 percent of the individuals with a net worth of $500,000 or more.
  • By 2010 women will have the majority of wealth in America.

Moreover, in Canada, the number of self-employed women in Canada has increased by 50% in the past 15 years, according to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CBIC).  “…one million Canadian women will own a small business by 2010,” as stated in a CIBC report.

These will be women who are too independent to oblige by the 9-5 corporate world, women who value and love their independence in creation, women dedicated to fulfilling their roles as both mother and professional, and women who are willing to take risks and value their skills and expertise.

It’s important to recognize the success of women in entrepreneurship. Women are responsible for the achievements of increased economic growth, improved productivity, improved distribution of income, and improved employment rate, that’s why we need to celebrate.

In recognition of Women’s Small Business month, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced this week, that it has launched a new cooperative Strategic Alliance. Partnering with Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence (CMI), the alliance will promote opportunities for women entrepreneurs through education, training and counselling to promote economic independence and the growth of women owned businesses.

That has to be a good thing. You can catch up on all the hot topics for Women’s Small Business month by searching #smbiz on Twitter. Stay tuned through @womanzworld too!

I’m pretty fascinated to look at the global perspective on women in business and am on the lookout for other such initiatives around the world.  Stay tuned.
